Foreign Language for a person refers to a language that is not spoken in the region he is residing in. There are certain features that distinguish a foreign language from the second language; lack of similarities between the first language and the other language, less opportunities of use, different script and no historical links being the pervasive ones.

English is the language that is no more a cultural possession of English speaking countries. For its far reaching influence it has become a global language – ‘Lingua Franca’. There may be many possible reasons for one interested to learn English as a foreign language. Education, business, employment, travel, matrimony and simply for expanding the skill set are some of the common reasons. It is the dominant medium of communication in almost all fields of life and holds the position of official as well as the second language for many countries, institutions and organizations of the world. This is the reason for which over a billion people can speak English at least at a basic level and the gains are such fruitful that one will surely want to expand it to a further level.

Learning a foreign language is an easily nurtured skill. One can learn English as a foreign language both in the home country as well as the foreign country. A little time and effort on daily basis will help you a lot in the longer run. You can learn English for as less as ten hours time according to some experts. Here are some of the tips that will help you a lot if you are serious in your endeavors:

Practice a lot; it makes the man perfect.

Increase your vocabulary. Try to learn every new word you come across in your daily life. The best way to increase your database of vocabulary is to use it and the best way to do it to learn new words as sentences, i.e. how these are used in the sentence. You can use other memorizing tactics as well; LOCI method, Link Word method, and the Pimsleur method to name few.

Follow the grammatical rules.

Increase sensory input to your brain; read English, hear English and think in English – you can not learn a language until unless you think in it. So, avail all possible resources; be it music, movies, books, magazines or games.

Select the English Learning Course with great care. The most important consideration in this regard is that the instructor should be a learned one. The course should include maps, brochures, flyers, classified ads, post cards, tourist information, catalogues, CD ROMs, videos, games, puzzles, magazines, music, movies, pictures and audio material. Remember, a reasonable English learning course is not more than a one year long.

The modern speaker of English language would not have guessed even a single word if he had been in the age of old English. The transition is very obvious and very sharp. The original English or the old English was not even one percent like its descendent; the modern and the latest version of English language. It has reached this position after having gone through a lot of changes and variation phases. There has been a long trail since the advent of English language and an amazing fact about it is that there was not a specific dialect or a specific range of words being there in it. Rather, on the other hand it was called the language borrowing a lot from the other cultures and civilizations; from those coming to the lands of Britain, conquering it and settling over there.

English primarily is considered to be a member of Germanic family of languages (indo European languages.) the reason behind it is the fact that there was the influence of three Germanic tribes in Britain who used to reside here in the ancient times. These tribes were Saxons, angles and jutes and mostly they used to speak in Celtic dialect and vocabulary. There is not one influential origin of English language rather it tends to be originated from varied origins like Anglo Frisian dialects, Anglo Saxon kingdoms of Britain, the speakers of Scandinavian languages etc.

English language has been through different periods and after this long journey, it has assumed the shape in which it is known in the modern times. These different phases and periods were

Old English

Middle English

Modern English

Early modern English

Late modern English.

Old English is said to be totally different from the modern English language. It was more like Celtic dialects and symbols having influences of Germanic and Scandinavian tribes. After that, came the turn of the Middle English. That period added some more variations to this language. Latin and French influences were got attached to this language and these influences are still to be seen in this language where there are different words having their origin either in Latin or French language. From this period onwards, English started to take that shape, it is known in this modern time. Early modern English phase was the time of classical renaissance. A lot of work can be seen in that time, being done in the realm of literature. Geoffrey Chaucer is said to be the first one who originated the legitimacy of English as a known language. In the renaissance age, Britain saw many writers who contributed to the nurturing and enrichment of English language like William Shakespeare.

In the early modern English and the late modern English, the difference is of vocabulary only. A lot more words and phrases got to be added in the early phase but in the late modern version, this attempt was made even more convincingly. The late modern English is the version that is being carried on to this modern time. This is the history of its journey from the Celtic and tribal origin to this latest version where most of the population living on this planet seems to acknowledge the worth of this language.

English grammar is a rock building tool of English language, which is regarded as the mandatory foundation for ruling the each sentence correctly and accurately in the construction of phrases and sentences of the English language. There are two basic themes about the English grammar which include descriptive and prescriptive groups. Where descriptive group of grammar illustrates about the major grammatical system, Although prescriptive does not portrays the English grammar but it is meant to settled and organized the catalogue of possible terms and social conditions, which are needed to be followed for presenting a good writing work, To set out the manuscripts according these rules is a superior way for clarifying the linguistic abilities of native speakers. Prescriptive grammar does hold the chances to be changed from time to time thus can be represented with the different frame out with regards of regulations. At its center, the expression grammar calls for either the natural arrangement of words and sentences such as morphology and syntax correspondently in English language or to learn the basic description of the management, classification and structure of the words, which have been described in the books of grammar respectively to their rules. Other developments concerning the term grammars are orthography(comprises spelling), use of punctuations and capitalizations, one word substitution, semantics( points toward word meanings), pragmatics indicates the mode of verbal communication and language are being used in context and lastly phonetics and phonology which means the sound of the different aphetically words, where each has got one’s own style in pronunciation.

The rules of grammar elaborate that how the language should be built in, using correct categories of grammars and following rules as well. The term number designates about the structure of singular and plural nouns and all part of the sentence must comply with the rules of numbers such as (e.g. wife Vs wives), in the same sense Gender is a term which hardly seems to exist in the English language, but it is revived in German language and generally looks upon the divergence between masculine and feminine nouns, even narrates the nouns comprehensively which are neutral in the nature.

The distinct categories of tenses are formally construct the correct meaning and understanding of the sentences, different formation of verb such as I read- He reads; We read- We are reading; We have been reading – he has been reading are different ways in order to elucidate the combination of sentences along with system of various verb and conjunction. A grammar is something designed for more to describe the themes for placing out the verbs, sentences and conjunction in the right way round, hence a grammatical category does not make up a correct phrase alone, it has to combine with different aspects of English language for expounding the logic of a sentence.

There are the number of books available in the market, where you may find all sorted out topics of grammar at one place, further more the three segments such as words grammar, sentence grammar and word grammar are classified into different sections for instance part of speech, content words, classes, nouns, pronoun, adjectives, clauses, adverbs, synonyms, antonyms, interjection, prepositions and conjunctions.

English language is the second most spoken language through out the globe and is known as lingua franca, which means frequently spoken language. Pertinent to this saying, we perceive its vital importance by perceiving from our environs. Whenever it comes to any aspect of daily life, there is an eminent use of language skills and English language covers the maximum part. Any person from any walk of life, come up with the English language whether firstly, as second level or may be at tertiary but one can not deny its standardized use and affluent use all over.English language or any language is known to be a skill. And a skill is never learnt, or crammed; it is all about the to and fro practice that will make you perfect, by establishing a liable grip on the pertinent resources. Getting indulged into an impetus where people are using English a communication mode can help you a lot in learning English. So pertinent to this, English language teaching is, and should be considered as a very important thing to enable people on traveling in the same boat. There are a few concerns which require teaching of English language and those are firstly as it is mentioned that English language is the global language, every one is familiar with it. But the matter is that though every one speaks but the dialects, pronunciation and the grammar varies according to the geography. And it really matters because the epoch nowadays has omitted the borders and people gather upon mutual interests, so it is really devisable to ensure that every one is one the same page when in a communication clause. Similarly those people who aren’t the native speakers but have to learn English, it is very important to make things regard and up to the standard while being tangled with them. Often it is seen that a teacher is followed in creating concrete concepts so it is advisable to the English language teachers, that do equip your self with the standard knowledge and skills so that the teaching is effective.

For the beginners or the non-native speakers, a combination of certain methodologies whole English language teaching, is opted amongst which the drilling method is very effective and used as a standard internationally. The phrases and the sentences are drilled into the mind of the child enabling him to understand the situations and synthesize while commenting on it as his/her own views. Similarly for professionals, an effective combination of multimedia and articles is opted where the incumbents or students are provided an environment where they can excel and polish their abilities. This too is similar to a drilling strategy that the more you get into, the more you take with you.

So the fact overall is that we are English language speakers and are known globally. So it is really important to speak ONE language, with out any sort of variations and grammar differences. And effective English language teaching should be there to cater these needs.

English is a language; which is the second international language spoken all around the globe by its native, non-native speakers; is commonly known as lingua franca which means that English language is ranked as a dominant language when it comes to sundry aspects of communications in life whether it is business, entertainment, politics or diplomacy [...]

English is a language; which is the second international language spoken all around the globe by its native, non-native speakers; is commonly known as lingua franca which means that English language is ranked as a dominant language when it comes to sundry aspects of communications in life whether it is business, entertainment, politics or diplomacy etc. But most probably what is inferred about English communication is that we deal with spoken English on a relatively quotidian basis. Spoken English is the spontaneous means of communication when it comes to communicating. Though the dialects vary from country to country or even in a country region to region; but speaking English is the preferred mode of communication under every stream of life. When it comes to be a student, or an entrepreneur dealing with commercial transactions, or a social worker who is more inclined towards being mobile, are into speaking English when it comes to communicate, under majority conditions.

When a question arises of revealing a standard of spoken English that how we can be on the same page, or what are the standards we shall work on to improve our spoken English. According to me, speaking any language is an art or the game of relating to a stimulus. No institution or a teacher can encode the phenomenon or criteria in you; it is just you who have to synchronize your communication pertinent to the routine you are following. For example a person who is not a native speaker and knows English, but want to work on spoken English skills, then consider a real time situation which are into or have encountered in the nearest past. Make a list of the events that occurred chronologically. Alone, or with the relative group of people talk on the events of that situation. First discuss what happened, then discuss what you wanted that to be or what was to happen or what should happened. Speak, without considering you are delivering wrong, burgeon your ideas and don’t translate your language to English, think in English, interpret in English and then speak in English. Take your time as much, but do consider English when speaking.

Initially; in addition to this, do come up with a new word daily which preferably should be an alternative of what most commonly you speak e.g. a common word used is ‘hard working’, then instead of hard working you use ‘assiduous’ and try speaking this instead of hardworking. It will nurture you in a dual way; firstly; you come up with new and innovative sentences with the word assiduous while speaking English and secondly it will develop your writing skills as well because your vocabulary increases day by day.

Concluding, spoken English is all about practice and making your habit. Don’t jumble up, stay cool and practice with peer groups or native speakers. Think over unanimous situations and ponder over the words making new sentences. Within days you would see your progress heading towards being proficient in terms of spoken English.

Learning any language which is not your mother tongue is not an easy task. Same is true in case of English language as well. Although it is widely used all around the world, yet for someone who is new or unfamiliar with this language, it is not a piece of cake. Many people take on English language courses and adopt many ways to learn to be familiar with it. However, since language is itself a complex stuff, learning it properly needs a lot of time and effort.

Learning any language implies being able to speak, read, write and understand it. People coming from different parts of the world have different dialects, styles and aptitudes. Furthermore, people have their individual response level towards a language as well. All these aspects have to be taken into consideration while learning or teaching a language. Same is the case with English.

To be able to speak, read, understand and write English, you will have to adopt a systematic approach. Here are some steps whish will make the process of learning English for you comparatively easier.
You need to put all your senses in the pursuit of learning a language. You should try to learn English just as you learnt your mother tongue when you were a baby. How did you learn it? Yes, you heard people talking! So the first step is to listen to English language. For this purpose, you can watch TV programs or movies in English. You can also listen to news in English. Try to comprehend various words. You can use the dictionary to look for the meanings of the words in the start. You can also find audio CDs of English tutorials. They also have books with them which make it easy for you to hear and read what the speakers are saying. You can try to talk with the speakers or repeat after them.
Then you should listen to the radio programs or songs in English. All these efforts will allow you to learn English in a natural way just as you learnt your mother language.
Then it is time to read. You need to read English as much as you can. Read English newspapers, magazines, books and anything you like. Internet is the simplest means to read things in English. You can find several article sites or other information sites from where you can read whatever you feel like. You should just browse information on any subject of your choice and then read it.

Then, it is time to practice. You need to talk in English. Whatever you understand and have read so far, you must put it into words. Although you will feel hesitant in the beginning but this is how everyone feels when he or she is new to something. After a few days of practice you will be able to gain confidence and then the hesitation will go away. Although you may still make mistakes, but it is only natural. The more you practice the more will you be able to improve your English.
